Versus mode is a bit different. Last time I played it there were quite a few hackers and it wasn't really any fun. Good to play with a group of friends, more fun than the campaign IMO, but might be hard to get 7 friends to join up for one at this point. I would recommend sticking to the campaign, and online campaign.
I actually met most of my friends in l4d2. You can join public games, and if they're nice fellows, you can go into steam overlay (Shift + TAB), select players > Recently played > add to friendslist.
